Prints ideas designed for babies and new parents
I have a friend who recently became a parent. Back in May 2025, together with another friend whose hobby is sewing, we brainstormed a few ideas for baby shower gifts we could make for her.
We struggled to come up with something that would combine both 3D printing and sewing.
One challenge with making items for babies is that they tend to put everything in their mouths, and printed PLA filament is not food-safe. (This point is debatable if you use FDA- or EU-approved filaments and a printer designed for food safety, but I will not go further into that topic here.) Using a food-safe epoxy resin was another option, but I did not want to take any risks with a newborn, so I looked for alternatives.
I printed a mushroom-shaped night light. Red light is considered beneficial for babies’ sleep. I added an LED inside, and voilà!
I remember my parents measuring my height as I grew up and marking it on the wall. While searching for a height chart model, I found this one which seemed suitable.
I printed the stars in blue phosphorescent filament so they glow in the dark.
I then painted the rocket model at the bottom and added strong double-sided tape so it could be mounted on the wall. Here it is, loosely assembled on the floor:
While browsing, I came across a whale-shaped tissue box cover. I thought it would be a nice addition to a child’s room, and it seemed like a good opportunity to try using my airbrush. I made a mess and needed several attempts to get a satisfactory result, but I am happy with how it turned out.
She mentioned that she uses a Cybex stroller. After searching, I found a 3D model of a Cybex-compatible cup holder. I printed it in PETG for better durability, and it fit perfectly.
From her point of view, it looks like this:
There are certainly many more things that could be made, but I found it difficult to come up with ideas. If any parents have suggestions, feel free to send me a message at me@kaonashi.dev.
