Under Desk

Desk and under desk setup with 3D printed accessories

The 3D printing community is full of open-source projects that evolve over time through community contributions.

Multiboard is a modular 3D-printed mounting and storage system developed as its own ecosystem, influenced by existing organizational systems such as Gridfinity.

Hands On Katie created a first version of Underware, a modular cable-management solution designed to work with Multiboard.

Later, BlackjackDuck released a second version of Underware, expanding the original concept with additional variants and customization options. Around the same time, David D introduced a new modular grid system called OpenGrid, and shortly after, Pedro Leite created a version of Underware adapted for OpenGrid.

This progression illustrates how projects are iterated, remixed, and adapted across different systems within the 3D printing community.

For more details on Underware, you can watch Hands On Katie’s video.

In 2025, I decided to upgrade my boyfriend’s desk setup. He had been using my old desk for a while.

Previous Desk

His birthday was approaching, so I started planning and taking measurements. He wanted a standing desk, so this feature had to be included in the project.

I bought an oak wood plank for 68€, which I cut, sanded, and varnished.

I also bought a standing desk frame for 92€ and a PC Monitor Stand 54€. After adding cables and accessories, all that was left was filament spools, a 3D printer, and the time to assemble everything.

This brought the total to 214€, which rounded up to about 250€ including cables and filament.

Standing Desk Frame

My main regret was not finding an under-desk mount large enough for his PC case. Building one would have required metalworking tools, which I did not have, and my space and budget were limited. As a result, the PC case remained on a wheeled wooden platform I had built earlier that year.

Using the Underware collection, I was able to plan a grid system to manage the cables and keep everything organized.

Then came the printing phase. First, the grid:

Then the individual parts, including grid connectors, cable hooks, and power strip clamps:

Everything was mounted under the desk:
